It’s that time of year again! Tick season! I hate the little buggers (sorry about the pun). I was hoping that the bitter cold winter we had in the Northeast killed off some of the ticks, but I understand that might be a false assumption. I have not had any ticks on my dog yet this year, but I sure had them last Fall. I found this article about 5 easy ways to get rid of them in your yard. As the popular saying goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, so I’m going to try some of these ideas.
The TickEncounter Resource Center at the University of Rhode Island has also suggested the idea about tick tubes. You can buy tick tubes online, but you can also save money and make them yourself. Basically a tick tube is filled with cotton balls that are treated with a pesticide. Field mice living in your yard are attracted to the cotton balls to use for their nests. Mice may be carriers of ticks and tick eggs. Permethrin kills ticks, but it is safe for mice. Stuff the treated cotton balls down the mouse holes, or stuff them into empty toilet rolls and scatter them for the mice to find.
Bright Steps Reflective Leg Bands will help keep your dog safe in low light conditions.
I also like to treat some articles of clothing and wear it on the dogs when they are out. I purchase Permethrin at Tractor Supply. Tractor Supply sells concentrated Permethrin at a great price. You dilute small amounts of Permethrin with water, and it goes a long way. A bandana treated with Permethrin will kill ticks if they come in contact with it, or you can also treat a vest or reflective leg bands for your dog to wear. The best way to treat articles of clothing is by soaking them in the Permethrin mixture, but you can also spray it on and let it dry. If you soak the clothing, allow it to soak for about 2 hours before wringing out and drying. The treatment will last through many washings.
This article from the TickEncounter Resource Center provides instructions and videos on two methods to treat clothing against ticks. Clothing can be treated for yourself, as well as for your dog using the same methods.

Effective Pet Flea Treatment without Harmful Medications
It’s that time of year again when fleas and ticks will be a problem for your cat or dog. It’s a tough situation because you want to make sure your pets are free of pests, but you don’t want to endanger their health with chemical treatments. What should you do?
Fighting off an infestation of fleas on your pet can be an ongoing battle. Most flea combs are great at pulling out flea eggs, but when a flea gets caught in the comb, they can jump off before you can kill them, and then re-infest your dog, cat or house. Traditional flea medications and topical treatments are generally effective but can be messy and harmful to the environment and to your pet.
Eyenimal Pet Electronic Flea Comb
Eyenimal has invented a lethal weapon that is deadly to fleas but completely painless and harmless to your pet. The Eyenimal Electronic Flea Comb is an electronic flea comb that generates a mild electronic tension when it comes in contact with fleas and parasites. It is simple and efficient to use, and poses no danger to your pet. It is totally painless and harmless. It kills fleas instantly by electric shock, while remaining non-perceptible by people or pets. As there is no active ingredient used, you can use it over and over again. It couldn’t be easier! Plus it is fun to use!
Topical flea medications may be harmful to your pet, so using the Eyenimal Electronic Flea Comb is a safe alternative. It can be a safe and effective form of flea control for both cats and dogs. The Eyenimal Electronic Flea Comb can be purchased online at ShopForPuppy.com, where a portion from each sale will be donated to Rescue.
It has been my experience that ticks are on the rise here in the Northeast US. I cannot vouch for other parts of the country, but I have picked off more ticks on my dogs in the last 2 years than I have in 20 years previously. Prevention of ticks seems to be a “no brainer”, but it isn’t that easy when one is concerned about the possible consequences of putting poisons and chemicals on our pets. Did I ever mention that I hate ticks?
I am not sure how I feel about this and I have not had the chance to do much research, but I thought it was worthy of an announcement. Please do your own research and check with your vet before changing treatments for your pets.
BRAVECTO, a chewable flea and tick treatment for dogs from Merck
The U.S. FDA just approved a new chewable flea and tick treatment for pets. BRAVECTO, from Merck Animal Health, is the first chewable tablet for dogs that has been shown to quickly and effectively kill fleas and multiple tick species for 12 weeks in a single dose. BRAVECTO is a flavored chew treat that is only available through veterinarians, so we will not be selling it on ShopForPuppy.com. Merck claims there are no known complications, and the most common side effects are mild and transient gastrointestinal effects.
If it works and has no side effects or risks for your dog, then this may be a solution to help prevent and treat ticks!
